China, the Middle Kingdom, is like no other country on earth. China's ancient culture and landscape is unique. For centuries China stood as a leading civilisation, outpacing the rest of the world in the field of arts and sciences. Paper, gunpowder, the compass and printing are Chinese inventions. From the Great Wall to Guilin Li River, from the Terracotta Warriors to the Three Gorges and from the Forbidden City to the Snow-capped Himalayas, China is also home to some of the most overwhelming sights imaginable.
China has numerous smaller attractions that are worth visiting, including many magnificent temples, delightful pagodas, beautiful willow pattern bridges and gardens considered such masterpiece they are listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. More than 30 man-made, natural and cultural treasures have been given this distinction in China.
China is also home to the greatest diversity of wildlife on the planet. It has more than 2,400 species of land based vertebrates 10 per cent of the total on earth and nearly 1,200 varieties of birds. Many of this amazing collection are rare species found only in China. These include everyone's favourite, the Giant Panda, as well as the Golden Monkey, Red-crowned Crane and Chinese River Dolphin.
